Bounds of Bonds

Sometimes, on good days, the posts write themselves. Today was one of those days. I haven’t written rhymed poetry in a very long time. It’s one of those things that needs inspiration. Maybe it’s the heightened emotions of the past few weeks, or the situation in general, but today the words flow freely. I am grateful. Boundaries are a hard topic for most. I hope this short poem conveys what boundaries are, why they are important and how they’re used.

Bounds of Bonds

I draw an imaginary line, this side all the things I’ll do.

The other side is the things I won’t, but it all depends on you.

I place a sign, no trespassing it says.

It’s placed there, so you don’t have to guess.

I need this space, this body is mine.

Crossing that line is very unkind.

In the dark, these perimeters shed some light.

They help you to understand my plight.

In my periphery, I see you creep in.

Seeing limits as an obstacle, not a margin.

My thoughts and limits are placed for my use,

Not honoring them is a form of abuse.

I build up walls, You tear them down.

I hold on tight, please don’t let me drown.

The extent of my barriers, they shrink and they grow.

Entering my enclosure, you reap what you sow.

Inside my borders, I feel safe to be me.

This is my space, respect is what I need.

I don’t like to be trapped, it makes me feel fear.

It easier on both of us, if you adhere.

If I am fortunate, I will find a few,

who make me feel bolder, shameless and new.

If I allow you in, please honor my trust,

This is non-negotiable, it is a must!
