I have a bit (not a gag pun) of a small face and mouth. It comes along with being a petite woman. Unfortunately being petite does make some things hard to buy for. Example, when I buy sunglasses, I need to look in the youth section mostly, and since gags are not made with children in mind (there’s a joke and a jail sentence in here somewhere), and are not usually available for sizing before buying, I’ve tried many, but often decide they are too big for my small face, long term.

In the past, Mister K has made gags from rope using a sailors knot called a Monkey Ball, or made bits using the same material. Great because it’s customizable, but rope gets wet, and when wet, knots get tighter and become almost impossible to untie, and then there’s time needed to wash and dry dirty rope. So, it’s not an ideal solution.

Other items have been used in a pinch, like worn panties, a tie, and whatever this is. But I have asked many times for a gag that fits ME.

Ask and You Shall Receive…

Naughty North (the Canadian division of Naughty Betty’s) asked me if I would try their Full Bloom Silicone Ball Gag by XR Brands out for size. At first I was reluctant, because I’ve had other companies send me gags and I’ve had to write them back stating their product is much too big for me, to both our disappointment. So, I did some research about this gag beforehand and this is what I found.

The Full Bloom Silicone Ball Gag with Rose has three holes for breathability. All hardware is nickel-free and the PU leather strap is washable, adjustable, and comes in a sultry red and black lace design. Plus, the gag itself is made of a 1.7 inch (4.3 cm) diameter silicone ball.

Surely, something only 4.3 cm would fit in my mouth. Right? I mean it’s likely, I’d had bigger things in there…

I was curious, so I said I’d give it a go.

While I Waited…

Research is my thing. So while waiting for my new toy to arrive, I looked up everything I could about ball gags. I had formed this conception that perhaps, just maybe, I wasn’t using gags right. What if, I thought, they weren’t too big, but in reality, I was simply using them wrong.

This is what I found:

Silicone Ball Gags

“A gag ball is a round ball [that can be] made of either rubber, silicone, or plastic. It has two straps that go around the head to secure it. It sits behind the teeth, keeping their mouth open during bondage or other forms of BDSM role play.”

Morgan Mandriota – Cosmoplitan JAN 26, 2021 Your Everything-to-Know Guide to Ball Gags

Also, a ball gag should be small enough to fit IN the mouth, but big enough that the wearer shouldn’t be able to talk. The ultimate purpose of the gag is however, to have the wearer in, or feeling like they are in a submissive position.

So maybe I was using them wrong, but only because of my original dilemma- they’re too big for my petite frame. Or maybe I was using the wrong one, or the wrong type. Being no closer to knowing whether the issue was me or the manufacturers, all I could do was wait.

The Moment of Truth…

Betty’s is always a fast delivery, no matter where you order from, so it arrived in less than a week in a discreet box, with the product box housing the gag inside.

Inside I found the gag tucked in a simple plastic bag to protect it during transport.

The first thing I noticed about the Full Bloom Silicone Ball Gag is that it is super pretty. It looks classy, which is nice for fashion, or esthetics. As someone who enjoys capturing and posing for erotic photography, I understand things need to look good and it certainly meets that criteria.

Second, I noticed the straps begin as silicone too, mimicking a bit style gag, and designed to fit more comfortably than those made of elastic (which is horribly painful) or plastic (equally horrible for a different reason, IMO).

The style is simple, yet, visually appealing, and elegant. If you’ve been following me, you know the colors also match my bedroom theme, so that’s always a plus.

The silicone ball is has three holes, is small enough to fit into the palm, and when squeezing it in hand it has some give.

But is it Functional?

To answer that we need to go back to my research, and find out what makes a gag a good fit, and how to ensure they’re safe.

Safety First

  1. Safewords still need to be adhered to. Ensure there is a way for the gagged person(s) to use their safewords, if needed. A bell or brightly coloured piece of fabric is good for those who are bound. Hand signals work great for those who are not
  2. Consent/Aftercare- this discussion should happen before any play
  3. Never leave a gagged person unattended. Ever!
  4. Don’t use gags when the person being gagged has a cold, the sniffles, or is suffering from seasonal/pet allergies
  5. Beginners should only use ball gags for 15 minutes at a time, slowly working up to longer periods. Begin with ball gags that have holes in them to facilitate breathing. If Ball gags are too much in the beginning, use a bit gag, which is smaller and extend less pressure on the jaw (great for those with TMJ or other jaw pain ailments). Silicone has more give than plastic or rubber, making them an excellent style for first-timers.

Gagged With Roses

With my criteria set for my trial, and many of the safety concerns being met, I asked Mister K to give me a hand. Helping me secure the strap, we found it was tight enough, even for my small frame, on the last notch.

The silicone ball fit nicely right behind my front teeth, exactly as it should and the bit straps didn’t dig into the side of my mouth like other gags I’d tried in the past. The PVC straps sat flush on my face and the give of the silicone didn’t allow me to bite down, so much as relax my jaw, which was as nice surprise.

I think it looked pretty good too!

After 15 minutes Mister K let me loose, supplying a towel for the expected drool that came with it. I found that my jaw wasn’t overly sore and I could have likely used it for longer (but safety first).

Though I have do concerns about the glue used to attach the rose and the possible harbor of bacteria and dirt as it wears down, as well as the fact that the rose decal being fabric means ridding it of bodily fluids (mainly saliva, but let’s be honest, we all know “bodily fluids” could be other “things”) is reduced without ruining the applique.

And lastly, because of the above two reasons, it isn’t a good option for use with more than a single user.

But overall, it’s a great little gag. For just little old me, I think it’s perfect! I hope to use it many times.

Full Bloom Pros

  • silicone ball is washable and user friendly
  • adjustable strap for a “one size fits all” guarantee
  • attractive color scheme
  • small enough for the smallest mouths, yet big enough to do the job
  • bit design for increased comfort (if that’s what you were hoping for)

Full Bloom Cons

  • Rose is made from fabric and therefore not easily cleanable, this limits use with multiple partners.
  • the glue is noticeable, making for a less aesthetically pleasing appearance

  1. The product itself is lovely. But the presence of a rose seems to reduce the point of the gag to immerse a person in a subordinate position. So, from some angles, it looks like a daring person is holding a rose flower in his teeth 🙂

I'd love to hear from you!
